Composition is king

Most of the photography tips and tutorials I come across always start with “there are no rules in photography” or something to that effect.  But a rejoinder usually follows, something like “there are guidelines” to taking pictures or the more ubiquitous “the only rule in photography is that there are no rules.” Enough said. There are approaches and guidelines in photography and the most basic if not the most essential is composition. It’s what will differentiate a snapshot from a photograph. It takes practice and a keen eye to take well-composed images. For the skilled and professionals, this is almost second nature. And for us who just love to take pictures, it helps to make it a habit to properly compose before we click.
